Premier League 2016/17 Preview: Tottenham Hotspur FC
Mauricio Pochettino has been doing a wonderful job at Tottenham Hotspur. He made them arguably, the most attractive team in England last year. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to lead them to Premier League glory in 2015/16.
A year’s experience coupled with two shrewd additions to the squad might result in another strong campaign for the high-flying North Londoners.
They start their season against Ronald Koeman’s Everton at Goodison Park.
Performance in the transfer market
Spurs have one of the most settled teams in the league. This is probably the reason why Pochettino didn’t have to make a huge number of changes to the squad.
Victor Wanyama joins from Southampton for £11m. With Champions League football this season, he would give more options in midfield for Pochettino.
22-year old Dutch forward, Vincent Janssen joins from AZ Alkmaar. Having scored 31 goals in all competitions last term, he would be tasked with taking some goal-scoring burden off Harry Kane’s shoulders.
How will they line up?
Tottenham are expected to retain the 4-2-3-1 formation and their first choice lineup from last season.
The defensive unit of Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are all expected to start the season together.
Moussa Dembélé will play in midfield alongside Dier, with Wanyama providing cover.
The attacking trio of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are expected to lead the attack.
Who are the key men?
Christian Eriksen is the main source of creativity in the team. His vision and set-piece ability make him a big benefactor to Tottehnam’s ambitions this season. On the other hand, Harry Kane would be expected to fire in a bulk load of goals again. He is one of the favourites to win the golden boot this year.
The importance of Moussa Dembélé cannot be stated more. Spurs looked weak during his absence in the latter part of last season. His form and fitness would be key for Pochettino’s success.
Young players to watch out for
19-year old midfielder, Josh Onomah featured on the bench for Spurs during parts of last season. He would be looking forward to getting a few appearances under his belt this season, especially in the domestic cup competitions.
Marcus Edwards is another promising player in the youth ranks of Tottenham Hostpur. The young attacking midfielder who has very quick feet and is a fantastic dribbler is a player to keep an eye on.
Fans’ expectations
Tottenham fans would surely be hoping for another title race. Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal look really strong ahead of the new season. Spurs are therefore in for a tough battle next season. Retaining their place in the Champions League will be the minimum aim for Pochettino’s men.
Champions League nights are back for Tottenham. The fans would love to have another great run in the competition like they had under Harry Redknapp in 2010/11.
A settled squad led by a quality tactician in Pochettino makes Spurs one of the teams to watch out for in 2016/17.
