UFC 205: When Champions Collide
After a fight for the history books, “Notorious” Conor McGregor makes his way back to the ring against the UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in Madison Square Garden, New York. A McGregor win will put his name in the history books as he would become the first UFC fighter to hold two belts simultaneously. The pride of these champions and their respective division is on the line.
Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez will have to play at their strengths but ensure their opponent doesn’t. That is tough to come by. Both the athletes have a phenomenal record of take downs and submissions to win the battle and will look to do the same when they lock-heads against each other this Saturday.
Stats ahead of UFC 205 main event
Eddie Alvarez | Vs | Conor McGregor |
28 | Wins | 20 |
4 | Loss | 3 |
61% | KO/TKO | 85% |
18% | Submission | 5% |
21% | Decision | 10% |
What works for whom?
The “Notorious” McGregor would heavily rely on his pace and youth apart from his strong hands to take on the more experienced Eddie Alvarez. Alvarez on the other hand, is heavier, taller and significantly stronger when it comes to forcing his opponents down to his submission holds and take-downs.
McGregor is quite average when it comes to blocking or avoiding his opopponents’ manoeuvres. He is pretty good with his knock-out ability and fast finish. Both the athletes are heavy hitters and will rely on their striking options, but Alvarez is much efficient when it comes to defending himself or forcing his opponents to submit. He will have to be careful in that area. And, work his way to winning the war.
However, it is clear that neither of the athletes is willing to take it to a long-drawn battle, which makes their intention clear from the very start. The ability of these athletes is known, and, they can put in their all in a fight. They are not going to give up easily and it might ultimately result in a test of endurance and stamina. Which, might not work in favour of McGregor as his stats show. He has been more successful by finishing his opponents off with a K/O (knock-out) or TKO (technical knock-out).
However, if one is to believe the prediction is the match will be over with the experienced Eddie Alvarez retaining his title.
War of words
In the run up to the main event both the fighters have made their claims, Conor McGregor aims to retire Eddie Alvarez from fighting. On the other hand, Alvarez has vowed to shut the Irishman’s mouth for good. He further said that “this fight will break many records and go down in history, but not for McGregor holding two titles simultaneously”.
These are big claims made by the two fighters, whether the “Underground King” Eddie Alvarez live up to his words or does the “Notorious” Conor McGregor live up to his remains is to be seen on the night of 12th November at Madison Square Garden, New York.
The only thing certain to happen when these two champions collide, is history will be made.
